New NIU president visits Rockford

Although he won't become Northern Illinois University's president for another few weeks, Dr. Douglas Baker made a trip to NIU Rockford to meet with local leaders.

Baker met with community and business leaders during a breakfast in order to strengthen what he calls an important part of the university's partnership with Rockford.

"There's a number of people that really want to partner with the university and I think those partnerships are critical not only for the community but for the university and its students," Dr. Baker said. "The partnerships students can have working in the community, whether it would be in the public or private sector, really enhances their education."

Dr. Baker is replacing John Peters, who is retiring. He takes up the role on July 1.
