Law enforcement officials now say it is no longer clear whether Todashev actually lunged at the agent with a knife.
The FBI has called the incident a violent confrontation but has given no other details.
A man being questioned about the Boston bombing investigation has been fatally shot during an FBI interview in Orlando, Florida.
The FBI says the man, Ibragim Todashev, 27, lunged at an FBI agent with a knife during questioning at his home. He was then fatally shot. Authorities initially said the agent in question fired the shot, but the question of who was responsible for Todashev's death has now been left open.
The FBI agent was taken to a hospital for non-life threatening injuries. Todashev, a mixed martial arts fighter, was recently charged with aggravated battery for a fight over a parking space.
No details were given on why the FBI was questioning Todashev, but some of his former roommates said he knew Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the older of the two brothers accused in the bombings. Todashev is a Chechen immigrant and is said to have known Tsarnaev from mixed martial arts fighting in Boston.
An FBI team from Washington will investigate the incident.
