WREX staff volunteers for day of service

Put a hammer to a nail, and a new life can begin. That's exactly what the staff at WREX did this past weekend.

Employees teamed up with the Rockford Area Habitat for Humanity to spend a day of service building the foundation of a new start for families in need.

"It's a lot of hard work. a lot of hard work," said future Habitat for Humanity homeowner, Carrie Floyd.

Floyd has never owned a home. And until about a year ago, she never even dreamed it was a possibility. But on May 25th, the staff at WREX looked to change that, hammering nails, sawing and working to help the Rockford Area Habitat for Humanity build her home.

Once Floyd's place is finished, it will be Habitat's 101st home in the city.

"It helps people grow up in a home instead of an apartment or a house. it helps break that cycle, that poverty cycle," said Don Kelley, project supervisor.

Habitat for Humanity focuses on building a future for families looking for a life change. They are selected based on need, ability to make mortgage payments and their commitment to owning a home.

Kelley and the Habitat for Humanity crews trained the WREX staff on how to make that a reality. Spread out over three houses, the staff was asked to do everything. Sine put up siding, others did electrical work.

"Different people have different skills and depending on where we are during the build cycle, those people will come out to help with say varnishing the wood work, that kind of thing," said Kelley.

In the end, Floyd and her three boys will have a place to call home.

"I'll be glad when I do move in because it's gonna be mine. Yeah, it'll be my own home," she said.
