A 32-year-old teacher at Polo High School is dead after an early morning crash at Montague Road and Rock City Road in Stephenson County.
The crash occurred around 7:07 a.m. on May 20. Illinois State Police say Sarah Kamp was driving a silver Toyota west on Montague Road, and a stop sign that is usually located at the intersection of Montague and Rock City Road was not in place. According to the Stephenson County Highway Department, the sign was found in a nearby field and appeared to be damaged by weather. The Stephenson County Sheriff's Office says it had been reported missing about ten minutes before the crash. The sign was replaced Monday.
Since the sign was not there, police say Kamp continued into the intersection without stopping and hit a white Saturn that was heading north on Rock City Road.
Kamp was taken to OSF St. Anthony Hospital via helicopter, where she succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash. The driver and passenger of the Saturn, 56-year-old Barbara Faulkner of Leaf River and a 19-year-old female, were taken to Rockford Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The crash is under investigation and no charges have been filed at this time.
The Polo School District will offer grief counselors to help students and staff deal with the loss.
