UPDATED: One dead after overnight shooting on College Avenue

A person is dead after neighbors heard shots fired in the 600 block of College Avenue overnight.

Rockford Police responded just before 3:30 a.m. Saturday morning. There, they found a gunshot victim lying in the driveway of a residence. The victim is identified as 22 year old Katelynn Gourley, a Rockford Resident. She was pronounced dead at the scene by members of the Rockford Fire Department.

Neighbors say they don't know the woman, and say she didn't live in the house she was shot outside of.

Just one house down from there, a family, already startled by the night's events, got the shock of a lifetime. Amanda Campbell, mother of three, says the crime spilled over onto their property.

"I sent my oldest out in the back to go look for her sisters sandals, and her and her friend came in the house and came running to me saying, 'Mom there's a gun in the back yard.' I'm like 'Where at?' They go, 'In the sand pile.' The gun was loaded, it had two bullets in it." says Campbell.

Police can not confirm that the gun found in the family's back yard was the weapon used in the murder.

The area, stretching from Kishwaukee Avenue west to the Rock River, was recently ranked  "America's 14th Most Dangerous Neighborhood.' The score was given by a website which analyzes FBI data from local law enforcement agencies.

They can now add a murder to their database.

"That's just so hard to believe, we have so many good people, and like I said, we've partnered with Rockford Housing Authority, and the Police Department, and the Mayor, and we've really worked hard. It's hurtful to hear that designation," says Becky Lichty. Lichty has lived in her home for 14 years, and even served as president of the area's neighborhood association

She says she has seen the neighborhood through good times, and not so good times.

Lichty says, "I think it's a result of the dense population of poverty, the lack of owner occupied homes, and absentee landlords."

Rockford police have one suspect in custody tonight. 20 year old Joe Boose turned himself in to police this evening. He is charged with two counts of First Degree Murder and Unlawful Use of a Weapon by a Felon.
