Two names that have been part of the Rockford area for generations are going away for good. Logli and Hilander grocery stores are out and Schnucks is in.
Hilander and Logli shoppers 13News spoke to were not surprised by the news. Schnucks signs have been popping up all over stores but the reaction has been mixed from customers.
"As long as they provide the products and the pricing I don't have a problem with Schnucks," says Bill Michalsen, Hilander customer.
"Too many changes? asks 13News.
"I think so. People don't like change," says Charlotte Crouch, Hilander customer.
It's been about a year and a half since Schnucks bought out the Hilander stores in the area. The company already owned the Logli grocery chain. At the time this was the promise from the Schucks CEO.
"The Hilander name is going to stay in the market place. The Logli name is going to stay in the marketplace," say Scott Schnuck, Schnuck Markets chairman and CEO, in September 2011.
This is the message today.
"We have two names in the market and as we look to the future it makes perfect sense to bring everybody under one banner. You know we are a family company and we also our very proud of the family name we will be putting up," says Dennis Canada, Schnucks division manager.
Schnucks says the change is only in the name and the signs in the store. The products and employees are all staying. Based on the 13News Facebook page comments, people say this is one of a long line of unwelcome changes Schnucks has been doing in the stores.
"They are putting in brands that cost more, I've noticed and taking away some of the other cheaper brands." says Crouch.
But one happy Schnucks customer says it's just going to take time for everyone to be onboard.
"Hilander has come and gone. Logli has come and gone. We have Schnucks and we'll get used to it," says Salvatore Cannici, Hilander Customer.
Schnucks says starting next week the Hilander and Logli signs will be taken down and the new signs will go up.
Logli and Hilander stores around the stateline area will soon have a new name.
Beginning on Monday, May 13, the Logli on Rockton Avenue and the Cherry Valley Hilander will be renamed to Schnucks to identify the stores' parent company. The remaining nine area stores will soon follow.
Schnucks Chairman and CEO Scott Schnuck said the company waited until local customers became familiar with their stores and service before replacing their signs.
"When we acquired the family-owned Logli stores in 1998, Logli was the name everyone knew and loved. We decided not to change the name until more area customers got a chance to know Schnucks and what we stand for as a family and as a company," he explained.
The Rockford and Janesville Schnucks stores are currently the only ones operating under different names.
