Snappers Start Homestand with Win

Derek DeYoung fired five shutout innings for the Beloit Snappers, who cruised past the Peoria Chiefs, 6-1, in Midwest League action on Wednesday night at Pohlman Field with 235 in attendance.

By taking the series opener, the Snappers move to a season-best 16-13. The Chiefs slip to 14-13.
DeYoung (2-1) kept Peoria in check for the entirety of his start. In his longest outing of the year thus far, the right-hander allowed just four hits and one walk to go with a pair of K's in five frames. The Chiefs were never able to mount much of a threat, only getting two men in scoring position against him.
Beloit's offense resorted to the long ball to build up their lead. Sam Roberts started the scoring by lacing a two-run homer, his second, out to right off Josh Lucas (0-2). An RBI single by Daniel Robertson later in the second extended the lead to 3-0.  In the fifth, Renato Nunez pulverized a pitch over the wall in left for a solo homer, his seventh of 2013 and, after a walk to the next batter, Rashun Dixon found the range for his second bomb of the year, a two-run blast, and a 6-1 advantage.
Vince Voiro came out of the bullpen in the sixth and was tasked with finishing the game. He allowed the first three men he faced to reach and one run did score, but Voiro settled down, retiring 10 of the next 11 and throwing a scoreless ninth for his first save.
The Snappers and the Chiefs will play two on Thursday, starting at 4:00pm with the second game beginning at 6:30pm or 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game, whichever is later. Beloit will turn to RHP Austin House (0-2, 3.00 ERA) in game one and RHP Dakota Bacus in game two (3-0, 3.60 ERA). Peoria is set to start RHP Joe Cuda (1-1, 9.00 ERA) in the first game and LHP Hector Hernandez (1-1, 3.38 ERA) in the second. Fans can enjoy Snappy hour at Pohlman Field. Eight ounce Miller Lite drafts will be one dollar at the Firehouse Grill and small soft drinks will cost you only a dollar at the Main Stand. Rail mixed drinks will be on sale for $3 at the Sud's O'Hanahan's Bullpen Deck and the Miller On Deck.
