One group is asking you take a break from the big malls and head downtown to Rockford for some shopping.
That's the initiative a workshop is using to try and promote local buyers. A storefront workshop on Tuesday night called "Cross Marketing the Downtown Experience" drew in dozens of people. The River District Association in cooperation with Rock River Development Partnership wants to educate people on what downtown shops have to offer.
"I'm sure there's a lot of businesses they're not aware of. Actually when we started the retailers committee back in August which is now called shop downtown, there were several retailers that didn't even know each other existed. but we identified in the survey that we did last year that there were a lot of businesses people wanted that already existed," said Pam Schallhorn.
The storefront workshop series began in 2011.
