Belvidere Mayor's term ending

Belvidere Mayor Fred Brereton's last day in office is Wednesday.

Brereton said he has enjoyed his time as mayor, but is looking forward to getting back to his former job in insurance.

"It's been great. I wouldn't have changed the last 16 years for anything in the world. But when your time has come, my time has come," said Brereton.

Brereton announced last year he would not seek another term in office. On May 1, he will do the ceremonial swearing in for the city's next mayor, Mike Chamberlain. Chamberlain's formal swearing-in will come at the next city council meeting on May 6. And Chamberlain said he's ready to take on the job.

"When you finally get through and are elected you take pause and take a deep breath and say, 'well now I'm here, let's get to work.' And so, that's what I'm itching to do, is get busy," said Chamberlain.
