Following his first ever complete game victory, a two-hit performance versus Miami (Ohio), freshman Jordan Ruckman (Kankakee/Herscher) was named the Mid-American Conference West Division Pitcher of the Week Monday afternoon. The honor is the first of his career and NIU's fourth pitcher of the week award.
Ruckman, Northern Illinois Friday's starter in the pitching rotation, had a career day against the Redhawks April 26 as he only allowed two hits, two walks, and struck out five in a 3-1 win over Miami (Ohio). The freshman opened the game with seven shutout innings, surrendering only one hit in that span. He would finish the game with 120 pitches thrown, 77 for strike (.642).
The victory was his second of the season and his first career complete game. Through 41 games in 2013, the NIU pitching staff has thrown eight complete games, tying for the most by the Huskies since 2003.
With an 18-23 overall record, including a 13-5 mark in the Mid-American Conference, NIU leads the MAC West Division with four games in hand above Eastern Michigan. Buffalo leads the conference with a 13-4 mark, following a Sunday rain out Akron.
The Huskies will play a pair of midweek contests, starting tomorrow at Bradley and followed by a game at UIC Wednesday. The games will begin at 6 and 7 p.m., respectively.
