Thanks to an Illinois Department of Transportation grant, the Belvidere Police Department will step up roving patrols during the Cinco de Mayo holiday.
Off-duty officers will be hired back between May 1 and May 5. They will then be deployed at or near high-crash intersections and locations that see high traffic.
Belvidere Police Chief Jan Noble is encouraging drivers to use their seat belts and designate a sober driver if needed.
