Winnebago County Health Department offering free well testing

WINNEBAGO COUNTY (WREX) -

The Winnebago County Health Department is offering free testing for submerged private wells affected by this month's flooding.

The testing will be offered from May 6 through May 17. The agency has offered the following information on how flooding can affect wells:

  • Water wells are susceptible to bacterial contamination when they are submerged or surrounded by flood water
  • If your private well has been submerged or surrounded by flood waters, do not drink your water until it has been tested and found to be free of bacterial contamination
  • If your well has been submerged, take the following steps:
    • Wait until all water recedes
    • After water recedes, connect a hose to an outside faucet and run until water is free of visual contamination, which could take several hours - do not discharge water anywhere near the septic system
    • Once water runs clear, disinfect; the health department highly recommends hiring a private well contractor to do this
    • Once the disinfection procedure is finished (after about seven to ten days), water testing kits will be available through the health department

You will be able find a testing kit at any of the following locations:

  • Machesney Park Village Hall, 300 Machesney Park Drive
    • Pick up kits 8am to 4pm Monday through Friday, drop off samples 8am to 1pm Monday through Thursday
