Guilford Hires Martinetti as Basketball Coach

Dean Martinetti is set to take over the Guilford High School boys' basketball program as varsity head coach for the 2013-14 season. Administrators announced the new hire, pending board approval, emphasizing Martinetti's strong resume and coaching experience: 27 years as a player, athletic trainer, assistant coach and coach in northern Illinois.

"Dean has the passion to teach our young student athletes and a track record of rebuilding programs to be successful and stay successful," said Guilford High School Athletic Director Augie Toldo.

Martinetti began his head coaching career in 1995 at Jefferson High School, where each year the team earned more wins than the last. Martinetti led the J-Hawks to a regional championship in 2000 before taking over as head coach at Byron High School in the 2000-2001 school year. He took over as Guilford's head coach in 2004 and led the team to back-to-back regional championships in 2006 and 2007.

Administrators believe Martinetti will revitalize the Vikings basketball program as he has done with other programs throughout his career. Martinetti developed basketball programs at Rockford Lutheran, Byron, Guilford and Jefferson high schools. He also has taught in the Rockford Public Schools and is now a health teacher at Guilford.

"He's been very successful everywhere he's been. He's a great teacher of the game and developing the complete student athlete," said Mat Parker, Director of Athletic Activities and Program Development.
