Rockton residents should get ready they might see some unfamiliar faces watching them the next few months. The Village of Rockton is now part of a marketing studying being undertaken by the Northern Illinois University's MBA program. The school picked the town for it's students final project.

"The MBA students' goal is to develop a marketing and promotion plan for our community," says Mayor Dale Adams.

The students are part of NIU's fast track MBA program. The school usually picks companies or non-profits to try to improve but for the first time it picked a town. Specifically it's targeting the village's downtown and looking for way to convince people to spend their time and money there. The students say they bring a lot to the table in creating this plan.

"You have people from all over really different backgrounds, finance, marketing, accounting, who have experience in different countries and things like that that have seen successes and failures," says Brent Rosenfelder, MBA student.

The project has just gotten underway. Earlier the students traveled to Rockton for tours and Tuesday afternoon they heard a final presentation from the mayor and a Rockton Trustee about what the village needs. The dean of the College of Business says they have been doing these proposals for years to companies and almost always see their recommendation go into place. She doesn't see any reason why the same shouldn't happen in Rockton.

"Given the facility members that are coaching them and the business partners and the help that we have gotten from the Village of Rockton, they are going to be blown away by the suggestions and the recommendations at the end of the semester," says Denise Schoenbachler, College of Business dean.

The next three months the students will work to put forward plans in their research teams. Their final proposals will be presented in July.

The Village of Rockton gets its own high-powered promotions team all for free. A group of Northern Illinois University College of Business MBA students will meet with the town's mayor today to talk about the new assignment. The students will come up with a plan to promote Rockton and maximize its economic opportunities. Mayor Dale Adams says students have a lot to work with in Rockton. He touts historic parks, roomy athletic fields and a beautiful riverfront that all can be used in a marketing plan to attract visitors.

Mayor Adams says cities like Galena and St. Charles are the perfect model of what Rockton could become if the village was showcased in the right way. He hopes the NIU MBA students can use their knowledge to increase economic growth while students learn first-hand creative way to meet business challenges. 13 News Reporter Rebecca Klopf will be following this story.
