Northern Illinois men's basketball head coach Mark Montgomery announced today the signing of Aaron and Aaric Armstead to National Letters of Intent to join the Huskie men's basketball program for the 2013-14 season.
Aaron Armstead is a 6-foot-4 guard who started his collegiate career at Wisconsin-Green Bay and will have two remaining seasons of eligibility. Aaric Armstead is a 6-foot-5 guard who will join the Huskies as a freshman this fall.
"We are pleased to have Aaron and Aaric joining our program," said Montgomery. "We think that both of them will be able to help us right away and I know that they are looking forward to the opportunity to play together."
Aaron Armstead played one season at Wisconsin-Green Bay in 2011-12, appearing in 30 contests, making four starts while averaging 3.3 points and 1.6 rebounds per game. He played this past season at San Jose City College where he averaged 14.4 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.2 assists while helping the Jaguars to a 20-win season.
Aaron earned Associated Press Class 2A All-State First Team honors as a senior at Hales Franciscan in Chicago while, alongside his brother Aaric, leading Hales to a 27-4 record and the 2011 2A State Championship. Aaron averaged 16 points, 3.5 assists and 3.2 rebounds per game while also being named the Small School Player of the Year by the Illinois Basketball Services.
"Aaron is an athletic, scoring combo guard," said Montgomery. "Aaron understands the college game; he is an experienced, mature player which will be a benefit to our program."
Aaric averaged 14.1 points and 2.8 rebounds per game on the 2010-11 Hales Franciscan state championship team. As a senior at Bullard High School in Fresno, Calif., Aaric averaged 22.9 points per game, earned All-Fresno Bee honors and led the Knights to the California Southern State Regional Finals. Aaric spent this past year at La Jolla Prep in San Diego, Calif., the same school that current Huskie Darrell Bowie attended prior to coming to NIU.
"Aaric is a versatile wing player," said Montgomery. "He is a slasher and a high-flyer who can score in a variety of ways."
Aaron and Aaric Armstead become NIU's the second and third signees, joining Dontel Highsmith (Dowagiac, Mich./Dowagiac) who signed with the Huskies in November.
