DeKalb County veteran honored


A DeKalb County Navy veteran has been named April's Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs Veteran of the Month.

Jonathan J. Lehuta has over 30 years of service to his community, county, and fellow veterans. He enlisted as a Navy Weather Observer and Section Leader in January 1974. After four years of active duty, he enrolled at Northern Illinois University to study Meteorology and served in the NIU Veterans Club.

After graduation, he attended the Naval Aviation Officer Candidate School and served as a Weather Officer on the USS Okinawa before serving in Spain, Illinois, and California. Lehuta later served as an advisor to the NIU Veterans Club and was a founding member of the DeKalb County Veterans Assistance Commission.

Lehuta will be honored during a ceremony at the DeKalb County Veterans Assistance Commission on April 26. He was nominated for the honor by Herb Holderman, the superintendent of the DeKalb County Health Facility.
