A major construction project gets underway in Rockford and it could effect your drive. Work is being done on the North Main and Auburn roundabout. Crews started reconfiguring lanes and tearing down buildings but some business owners are anything but happy.
"We're going to lose some customers as it gets harder for people to get here it's going to impact business," says Tyler Voorhees, Rockford Billiard Cafe, owner.
The Billiard Cafe sits right on the corner of North Main and Auburn. The owner is preparing for a slow summer. With construction underway lanes will be shutting down and at times the whole intersection will close. This week traffic patterns will shift as utility work is done and the businesses on the southeast side of the intersection are torn down. But next week starts major changes.
"You are going to see a permanent one way lane going each way, you are going to cut double lanes down to single lanes next week," says Tim Hanson, Rockford Public Works director.
Then later in the summer expect the whole intersection to shutdown. That means drivers will have to find an alternate route or follow detours.
"If you want to stay on time allow yourself a little more time to get around town if you are going to have to go through that intersection, I would suggest you find an alternate route," says Hanson.
You can stay up to date on all the construction changes on the City of Rockford's website.
