Forrestville school district feels effects of budget deficit

When it comes to mending a broken budget, there's never an easy decision.  Administrators, parents and teachers in Forrestville Valley school district 221 feel the strain of that now.

Everyone involved says, recent struggles for the district have really changed what used to be a calm environment.

Low enrollment and lack of state aid results in letting go six Forrestville school district teachers.  Only 55 teachers work with the district's 900 students.

A teacher representative scolded board members for they way those educators were let go by name, at a public board meeting.  Some were in attendance, others learned the news from their peers.

"The teachers were also involved in every review along the way that required them to sign off by actually voting "aye" or "nay" and signing their name to a sequence of honorable dismissal and there were no surprises in our staff as there shouldn't be in any well run school," said Superintendent Lowell Taylor.

Board members tell parents and residents, they affirm the decision made in March and how it happened.

A $3 million budget deficit also calls for the board to eliminate 3rd through 5th grades at German Valley Grade School as well as consolidate bus services.  That leaves some students with more than an hour trip to school one way.

"We hope you will make clear, educational sound decisions that will keep cuts as far away from the classroom and children as possible.  Thank you, the concerned parents of the Forrestville Valley School District."

One of those teaching positions cut was for special education.  Dr. Taylor says even with only one left, the district will still educate those students within legal boundaries.
