Freeport mayor prepares to leave office

After eight years in office, Freeport Mayor George Gaulrapp is in a period of transition.

Gaulrapp was defeated by former Freeport mayor Jim Gitz in this year's February primary. Gitz then went on to win this week's general election, regaining his mayoral seat, and ousting the man who defeated him eight years ago.

Gaulrapp says he will miss working with Freeport's City Council and the people he has met over the years.

"It's a little bit of relief after eight years," he said. "I know my family has the brunt of it, when they read some things people anonymously put in blogs and things like that, but the majority of people were happy with what I did in very difficult times."

Gitz faced Jon Staben and Kathy Knodle in Tuesday's election.
