Weather may have affected Rockford voter turnout

Posted:

The day's intermittent rain may have played a factor in Rockford voter turnout, says Rockford Board of Elections Executive Director Ken Harper.

According to the Rockford Board of Elections, 22.18 % of voters cast their ballots at one of Rockford 39 polling locations. Of 87,073 registered voters, 19,313 ballots were cast.

This number is lower than during the 2009 election, when voter turnout was 24.5 %

Rockford Board of Elections Executive Director Ken Harper says this election season's early voter turnout was 50% higher than during the previous election season.

Polling places were their busiest during the morning and evening commute. Poll workers say they noticed residents were stopping to vote while on their way to work, and in the evening as they were on their way home. The noon hour also saw longer lines.
