If weather cooperates, the Illinois Department of Transportation will begin construction on IL 2 (South Main Street) in Rockford on Wednesday, April 10.
The portion of the street south of the US 20 Bypass to Beltline Road will have the pavement removed and replaced. Traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction as the road is replaced.
The work is just part of a larger $13.3 million project to improve the section of IL 2 from Beltline Road to north of Harrison Avenue/Springfield Road. The section of the street through the US 20 interchange was resurfaced last year.
Lane closures will also occur in the section of South Main north of US 20 to Harrison to allow contractors and utility companies to prepare for the future resurfacing of that area. Some ramps at the US 20 interchange will also be closed for periods of time to remove and replace the ramp connections.
Motorists should remain alert and cautious while in the area.
