Students at Riverdahl Elementary School got a lesson in dental hygiene from a few characters familiar with the process.
Pre-kindergarten through third-graders helped Tooth Wizard battle PlaqueMan Wednesday during a skit from the Delta Dental of Illinois Foundation's Land of Smiles program.
The program relies on skits, live demonstrations, and activities to teach kids the proper way to brush and floss.
"I think live theater is very important to our boys and girls," Riverdahl Elementary Principal Teresa Schneider said. "They don't get to see a lot of it and when you put live theater and actually a lesson like this learned, about taking care of yourself and your teeth, I think it's very powerful."
According to data from the Illinois Department of Public Health, 53 percent of third graders in the state have experienced cavities.
