Chicken ordinance pushes to next month's agenda

The decision about chickens in Machesney Park backyards flies the coop.

After last week's negative recommendation, two Trustees from the Planning and Economic Development Committee made the motion to drop the proposal from the agenda.  With elections next week, there will be a new Village President and three new Trustees the next time the ordinance is discussed.

Chicken advocate, Kristine Brown comments "One board can understand it and have all of the information, so that's important and it's okay to push it back a little bit because then people have more of a chance to understand what's going on."

Planning and Zoning Coordinator, Carrie Houston says "We weren't sure if the consensus was to make some revisions, maybe loosen the regulations or put more regulations, we wanted to get a feel for what the board was comfortable with."

The ordinance will be on the Planning and Economic Development Committee's agenda the first Monday in May.
