ROCKFORD (WREX) -

Gas prices are down 3.4 cents in the Rockford area, according to GasBuddy.com's survey of 139 local gas stations.

The average price per gas in Rockford was $3.67 on Sunday, 31.6 cents lower than one year ago and 17.1 cents lower than one month ago.

The national average dropped just 1.9 cents in the last week to $3.61 per gallon. That price is 28.1 cents lower than one year ago and 10.3 cents lower than one month ago.

"Gas prices in March came in like a lion and are going out like a lamb," GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan said. "For the first time in a decade, gasoline prices are going to be lower at the end of March than the beginning."

DeHaan says that GasBuddy research shows the last time March ended with a lower price than it began with was in 2003.
