Illinois State Police Director Hiram Grau has released the following statement:
"It is with deep sadness that I announce the tragic death of Trooper James Sauter, and on behalf of the men and women of the Illinois State Police, I offer sincere condolences to Trooper Sauter's family. Trooper Sauter left a legacy of courage, honor and duty and we will never forget Star #6095. Our hearts are heavy with grief, but they are also strengthened by Trooper Sauter's brave calling and dedicated service to ISP."
Governor Pat Quinn has released a statement on Trooper Sauter's death, saying, "Today the entire state of Illinois mourns the loss of Trooper James Sauter, who worked tirelessly to protect the people of our state. Illinois is a safer and better place thanks to his bravery and commitment to public safety. Trooper Sauter's untimely passing is a tragic reminder of the dangers our sworn officers face every day in the line of duty. I send my condolences to the family and friends of Trooper James Sauter. They are in our thoughts and prayers during these most difficult of times."
According to the Illinois State Police a District 15 Trooper was killed in a traffic accident Thursday night.
Trooper James Sauter was on duty when his truck was struck by a semi at I-294 South and Willow Road. He was pronounced dead at the scene early Friday morning.
Trooper Sauter joined the ISP in June of 2008. The 28 year old is survived by his wife and family.
Illinois Tollway Executive Director Kristi Lafleur released the following statement regarding last night's crash.
"On behalf of the Tollway board and entire Illinois Tollway, we are saddened by the tragic loss of Illinois State Police District 15 Trooper James Sauter. District 15 and its troopers are assigned to serve and protect our 286-mile system of tollways, and we consider them to be part of our Illinois Tollway family. We extend our sympathy to Trooper Sauter's family and the Illinois State Police after this horrible accident."
