The number of people in the United States applying for unemployment benefits went up last week.
The Labor Department reported the number increased by 16,000 compared to the previous week. The four-week average, which is a less volatile measure, rose by 2,250.
Economists say that even with the gain, the longer term trend in layoffs is remaining consistent with an improved job market, but they also say the job market and economy still have a long way to go to get back to full strength.
