Teen charged with murder in fatal Rockford crash pleads

The Rockford teen facing murder charges in the death of Karen Shafer has pleaded not guilty.

Seventeen-year-old Traveon Parham appeared in court for an arraignment on Thursday, March 28. He faces three counts of first degree murder and a litany of other charges related to the February 24 crash that killed Shafer.

The incident began in the parking lot of Holy Family Church, where police had responded to reports of people breaking into cars. Police say during that call, a deputy with the Winnebago County Sheriff's Department spotted a suspect vehicle in the lot and the suspects in that car fled south on North Alpine, striking Shafer's vehicle. Two other teens were also in the car; the investigation against them is ongoing.

Parham is due back in court in May.
