ROCKFORD (WREX) -

After delay followed by delay, we now know when the newest Driver Services Facility in Rockford will open. The west-side building will open April 2. Even though that is only next week it's already been too long of a wait for some.

"Very busy, very packed and it's a real pain coming all the way down here when we used to be able to go right over there on, what is it, Auburn," says Gail Madden, she used to go to the facility on Auburn Street.

"Crowd like this there must have been 50 people in the building," says Rodney Rhodes.

A lot of people left the Driver Services Facility this afternoon on East State Street in Rockford frustrated over the lines. Last year, the facility at Auburn and Central shut down now April 2nd a new "Express Facility" will open just a few blocks away at 3214 Auburn Street.

The original west-side site closed last July with almost no warning. White says it was partly because of issues with the landlord.  After a big public outcry he promised to open another site in that area of the city But it has taken more than six months to get it ready.

"First of all we had to find a facility, second we had to sign a contract, then we had to get involved in the construction and the rehab of the building," says White.

The new site is smaller than the Auburn and Central building but it will allow people to do things like renew a driver's license, state I.D., get your vision checked or register to vote.

"They can come to this wonderful facility and get all the services that they desire with the exception of the driving portion of getting a license," says White.

"I can't wait for the other one open because I have a few vehicles and trailers and stuff to register you know," says Madden.

The behind-the-wheel test are only available the East State site or the one on Baxter Road off I-39. The Auburn St. facility will open Tuesday, April 2, at 8 a.m. to the public.
