Welcome to Street Vybe, New Vybe Fitness' most popular class. It's a place where you can shake, dance, and bounce your way to an amazing workout. Aaron and I heard about it and had to check it out.
"When you go out to the bar, out with your friends, it's a lot of fun right," says Nnanna Egbujiobi. "That's no different than what you do here. All we do is take the element of dancing, the element of actual popular dancing and the element of friendship and community and bring it into a room and we kinda magnify that."
Nnanna Egbujiobi is the instructor... well more like our hip hop expert. He's the New Vybe owner and makes sure every class is high energy, and fun for everyone who joins. Even newbies like us. Aaron was surprisingly impressive, for parts of the workout. Other areas need some work. But "A" for effort.
Greg on the other hand traded in his hip hop moves, for some Chinese food. People like Tessa Watson and Erika Williams have been New Vybes member for a while and love the class, trading in a treadmill for Usher music and dance moves.
"When you have people around you, motivating you, it keeps you going," Tessa Watson says.
"The fastest hour ever, you don't even feel like you're working out," says Erika Williams. "You get a really good cardio workout, and it's fun and it flies by and I just love dancing."
But new members like Jeff Tilly sees it as a great opportunity to learn something new.
"I come Tuesday and Thursday, do the boxing classes and then I leave and everyone starts dancing, and it looks like fun, so I figured give it a try, do my best, and see how it goes, and it's an incredible workout," says Tilly.
"There's no pressure what so ever," Tilly says. "And I've never felt intimidated. I've never felt out of place. I've never felt, 'Oh people are snickering. And if they are snickering it's because we're all having fun."
And if anybody was laughing, it would definitely be aimed at us. While our foot work looked in sync, our moves could use some work. With Nnanna's guidance, I'd say improving shouldn't be too hard. And if you still don't think it's a workout, think again. The class burns close to 1000 calories, depending how hard your working it.
And when it was all said and done, we had an amazing time.
"Walk in here with the mentality of I'm just going to have fun," says Nnanna Egbujiobi. "It's not about dance steps. It's not about dancing like me or dancing like everybody else. It's about coming in here and having fun. At the end of the day, we do this because people enjoy doing it."
A little sweaty and a definitely tired, we still plan to go back for more.
