With the threat of utility rate hikes looming, AARP held a utilities forum in Rockford to teach residents how to fight back.
The forum encouraged area residents to contact their legislators to vote no on bills aiming to raise the price of utilities this year.
"Utility companies have unleashed the attack of the utility rates on Illinois ratepayers," said AARP Illinois Associate State Director Scott Musser. "AARP encourages Rockford residents become better informed about their rights, and to join us on our legislative efforts to push back on the rate hike bills introduced by electric, natural gas, and water and telephone companies."
According to a survey taken last year, 64 percent of AARP members in Illinois are concerned about being able to afford their utilities.
