A 60-year-old man has been sentenced to 19 years in prison for trying to rob a Rockford gas station.

Franklin Freeman was charged with attempted armed robbery for an April 2011 incident in which he tried to rob the manager of the Citgo gas station in the 4300 block of Auburn Street. Police say he showed a knife. Other customers at the station chased and detained Freeman until police could get there.

Attempted armed robbery is a Class 1 Felony, but due to Freeman's prior record, he was eligible for Class X sentencing of six to thirty years.
