Rockford Health Council hosting fitness program for families

The Rockford Health Council is teaming up with several community agencies to offer a Fitness for Life event at the Fairgrounds Valley Housing Complex on Sunday, March 24.

The family event will feature a Total Body Fitness workshop led by the Winnebago County Health Department. A Zumba class will also be held and the first 100 attendees will get a free sports bottle.

According to a Rockford Health Council 2010 Healthy Community Study, the Fairgrounds Complex has the greatest number of kids and families in need of quality nutrition and physical activity. To help combat that, pharmacy and medical students from the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford have been assigned to participating families. Through bi-monthly meetings, they monitor health and promote healthy behaviors with mentorship and large-scale health promoting activities. The goal of the meetings is to reduce sedentary lifestyles and deter involvement in high risk activities like drugs and gangs.

The Fitness for Life event will be held at the Fairgrounds Complex on Sunday, March 24 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.
