North Boone Community Unit School District #200 leaders face a six-figure deficit this current school year and next. It's a little more than $1,000,000 total deficit, about $500,000 this school year and next school year. School board members approved the list of potential reductions Thursday night with some changes.
A library assistant and grounds crew member will lose their jobs in August. Administrators originally asked to cut two assistants for a total savings of roughly $74,000. School cooks are getting shorter work days by 15 minutes each. The district is also reducing insurance costs by about $50,000, providing fewer P.E. uniforms and eliminating middle school yearbooks. Administrators started out asking for $1,000,000 in cuts, but school board members would only approve around $550,000, which they did Thursday, except for the change in library assistants, since now only one is being let go instead of two.
"If you look at the potential reductions, very clearly they're listed as potential reductions not recommended reductions. The administrative staff would rather not make any of these things, there are some things we'd like to add." -says District #200 Superintendent Steve Baule.
Some staff members say reducing even just one library assistant hits the district hard since there are only four total library employees and six schools, since next year they'll only have three helping out in the library. Superintendent Baule says the district's trying to find volunteers to help those remaining staff members.
To make up the rest of the deficit, district leaders are hoping for $400,000 to $600,000 in dissolving a special education co-op fund shared with Belvidere CUSD #100. Belvidere district leaders approved dissolving it earlier in the week. North Boone leaders are also hoping a county-wide sales tax referendum passes.
