Monday's Belvidere City Council meeting ended with possible raises for several city employees.
Raises for the Building Director, Zoning Inspector, and more were approved as amendments to the City's budget. If approved, the Building Director would get a 25.6 percent or $12,000 salary increase to $66,683.73 and the Zoning Inspector would get an 8.7 percent salary increase to $37,996.44.
The council is scheduled to hear a proposal to increase the salaries of the two deputy chief positions in the police department by 11.78 percent to $92,210 next week.
Belvidere Mayor Fred Brereton says those raises are causes of concern in the current economic climate. WREX tried contacting the six aldermen who supported the raises but has not yet heard back.
April 1 will be the next opportunity to pass the budget.
