Credit rating of 4 Illinois universities lowered

SPRINGFIELD (WREX) -

Moody's Investors Service has downgraded the credit rating of four Illinois universities due to their reliance on state money to operate.

Northern Illinois University, Eastern Illinois University, Governors State University, and Northeastern University were placed under review for a possible downgrade in December because of their reliance on state funding. The state itself has some of the worst credit ratings in the country due to its $97 billion pension crisis.

NIU is Illinois' third-largest university.
