
Hundreds of high school and middle school students from around the region gathered at Rock Valley College on March 16 for the Northern Illinois Regional Science Olympiad.
Harlem High School took the top honors in Division C, with H.D. Jacobs, Rockford Auburn, Westminster Christian, Durand, and Hononegah placing second through sixth. All of those teams will now advance to the state tournament at the University of Illinois in Champaign/Urbana on April 20.
Hawthorn North Middle School won Division B, with McCracken, Harlem, and Rockford Christian coming in second through fourth. Those four teams will also move on to the state tournament.
The olympiad is held in all 50 states and Canada and covers biology, chemistry, physics, earth science, and engineering. Some tests include building rubber band powered helicopters and working with data collecting lab instrumentation and using the data to analyze different science-related problems.
