Last week was a busy one for Rockford Police. They are continuing to investigate several violent armed robberies on Broadway. The crime spree is not yet over, tonight we add another incident to the list.
Around 1:30 Saturday morning, Rockford Police respond to yet another call in the Broadway area. This time, a murder has taken place.
Once at the scene, police find a vehicle and it's four passengers wrecked on the 1100 block of 15th Avenue. Of those passengers, two had gunshot wounds. The driver, 21-year-old William R. Patrick of Rockford was pronounced dead at the scene. 22-year-old Samantha P. Colson was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Dave Hoskins lives very near the scene of that overnight shooting. He says, "It's troubling when you have to sleep in here and there's people shooting guns outside your house that's for sure. I mean it really does bother you when you're trying to go to bed."
Dave has lived in the neighborhood for 20 years. In more recent times, he has had to wake up the entire family and move them into an interior room for safety after hearing gunshots.
"It's kind of troubling the next day when I'm asleep in class," says Dave's son Logan.
Despite this, Dave says he plans to stay in his home rather than uproot his family and find a new place to live.
Just down the street, his neighbors are thinking differently. "I want to move, cause I don't like this area anymore," says Vianca Urquiza.
Vianca and her mother worry the crime in their area is getting more frequent. Only a month ago, someone shot out the glass on their front window. They are starting to wonder if they made the wrong choice moving to South 6th street.
Vianca's family moved into the area about a year ago. Her mother has already purchased the home, making is more difficult to move, even though she says she wants to.
Police believe the early morning shooting began as some kind of argument between Patrick and the driver of another vehicle. No arrests have been made in connection with this murder.
