Despite the crime in Rockford's midtown district the last few days things continue to stay busy on the street and in the businesses. But that doesn't mean business owners and their workers are not being vigilant.
"I have my own pocket knife in my car and I have mace that my mom gave me," says Eliana Ecarreno who works at a business on Broadway.
She was actually carrying her mace up her sleeve as she ran to mail a letter outside the Broadway Post Office. Some of the people say they are making sure someone walks them to their car and a few employees say they asked to make sure they aren't left alone during shifts. But one business owner says crime like this can happen anywhere in Rockford.
"There are people on this street that have dealt with much more serious issues than this," says Bud Brauer, B & H Office Furniture owner.
He says his workers and business are safe and two bad people should not keep people away from the midtown district
"I think that I got a good crew here and I don't think a couple guys with a knife are going to come in and intimidate us," says Brauer.
Rockford Police have stepped up patrols in the area. Officers are walking the streets and squads have been driving around the district.
