With child obesity on the rise throughout the country, one local hospital is taking steps to address it.

FHN Memorial Hospital is teaming up with Sodexo to offer a spring session of Create Your Weight for Kids, a personalized 10-week weight loss and management program developed and taught by registered dietitians.

The program is designed for children with an adult chaperone and covers the following topics:

  • Portions and serving size
  • Making good choices while dining out
  • Snacking
  • Physical activity
  • Family involvement in healthy behaviors
  • Building self-esteem and confidence
  • Knowing the difference of eating when you're hungry compared to other reasons

The program will start on April 4 and will have classes each Thursday from 5:00 to 5:45 p.m. at FHN. The cost is $125 and covers all class sessions for each adult-and-child pair and healthy snacks. Kids in the program can earn "Nutribucks" that can be redeemed for prizes and children who complete the class will get a free trial membership to the YMCA of Northwest Illinois at Highland Community College.

For more information or to register, call 1-877-600-0346, ext. 949. Financial assistance may be available. Registration is required by Friday, March 29 and class size is limited.
