Winnebago's basketball team is heading to state for the fourth time under head coach Joe Murphy. The Indians beat Monmouth-Roseville 74-53 in the NIU Super-Sectional. Winnebago led 26-22 at halftime despite shooting 3-19 from behind the arc. Those 3-pointers started to fall in the 2nd half as the Indians pulled away.
Matt Reinke led the way with 20 points. Ryan Swigart came off the bench to score 16, including a thunderous dunk in the 2nd quarter. Jacoby Posley added 15 points.
Winnebago goes on to play Seton Academy in the State Semi-Finals Friday at 6:30.
In the earlier game at NIU, Eastland defeated Newark 51-41 to advance to state. The Cougars will face Madison Friday in Peoria.
In the 4-A DeKalb Sectional Semi-Finals, Jefferson held off Larkin 71-63 to advance to the Sectional finals. They'll face the winner of the Boylan vs. Crystal Lake Central game which will be played tonight at 7:30.
In the 3-A Freeport Sectional, Rockford Lutheran knocked off Woodstock 57-46 behind 21 points from Thomas Kopelman. Lutheran will face the winner of the Sycamore vs. St. Francis game in the Sectional Final Friday night.
