As the Rock Valley College women's basketball team prepares for a trip to the NJCAA national tournament to defend their national championship and #1 ranking, the post-season honors for individual players have started rolling in.
Keshawnee Alley has been named Player of the Year for the N4C (North Central Community College Conference). Alley, a 5'9 sophomore from John Marshall High School in Chicago, led the Golden Eagles in scoring this season at 13.7 points per game. She was also second on the team in rebounding after averaging just over eight per game. Alley was a second team all-conference selection last season as a freshman.
Also named to the all-conference team this season were sophomore Revonnia Howard (first team) and freshman Marquiesha Grant (second team). Howard led RVC in rebounds per game this season at 10.6 while also averaging 10.7 points and an impressive 3.9 blocks per game. As a freshman last season, Howard was also a first team all-conference selection and won the NJCAA tournament MVP.
Grant was the team's second leading scorer this season at 12.8 points per game.
RVC head coach Misty Opat was also named Coach of the Year for the second straight season by the N4C. In four seasons Opat has compiled a record of 93--34 and a stellar 41-8 mark in conference play with only one conference loss in the past three seasons. She has won three conference titles, two regional titles, and a national title in the last three seasons.
The all-region (NJCAA Region IV) selections were also announced this week and both Alley and Howard were named to that team as well.
The #1 seeded RVC women will play the first game of their NJCAA title defense on Thursday, March 14 at 1:00 p.m. against #8 Ocean County (NJ). The NJCAA women's tournament will be played in Rochester, Minnesota.
