2 Rockford students make it to state poetry competition

Two Rockford high school students will represent northern Illinois at the Illinois Poetry Out Loud state championship on Friday.

Anna Lepke of Jefferson High School and Caitlin Harmon of Auburn High School were both winners in the recent regional competition. They will now face off against 14 other regional winners from around the state to take home $200 and an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, DC to compete in the national championship. The state champion will also get $500 to purchase poetry books. The runner-up will receive $100 and $200 for his or her school library.

A total of $50,000 in scholarships and school stipends will be awarded at the national competition. The state competition will take place on Friday, March 8, in Springfield's Hoogland Center for the Arts.
