Freeport's sixth ward will have to find a new alderman.
Alderman Scott Helms is resigning and will attend his last City Council meeting as an alderman on Monday, March 4. Helms and his family are moving to a different home outside of the sixth ward, so he will no longer be able to serve the rest of his term, which expires 2015.
Helms said, "It has been my honor and privilege to serve the residents of Freeport's Sixth Ward for the past seven years. Representing my ward in city matters has been incredibly rewarding and I believe that I have made a positive impact, particularly regarding Freeport's fiscal health."
He added that his work with Neighborhood Watch was another highlight of his career.
