When it comes to the primary in Freeport, it's not a battle of Democrats and Republicans but of Citizens' and Peoples' parties.
The Peoples' party race was a battle of two business-minded candidates. John Staben is a Freeport business owner. He takes the primary by a count of 215 votes to 140 votes over Bettye Corbin. Corbin is a Freeport area realtor.
Staben says he's surprised about the win considering how quietly he ran his campaign. He knows he'll have to step it up from now to April if he wants a shot at the mayor's office.
And in the Citizens' party. Freeport Mayor George Gaulrapp will not be on the ballot come April. He lost to former mayor and the man who he took over for, Jim Gitz. Gitz tallied up 55% of the vote with just over 1,000.
