A man is dead after someone starts shooting inside a Rockford apartment. According to police a group of people were hanging out inside a west side home when things got out of hand. But neighbors say gun fire is so common in the area they did not even think someone would be dead as the result.
"It was later on during the night and I heard something like, 'pop, pop' and I told my wife I thought I heard a shot down in the projects again," says Larnel Brown.
Rockford Police say around 10:15 Monday night Jimmy Hollins, 20, was brought to Rockford Memorial Hospital where he died. He had been shot in the chest. Police found the crime scene inside an apartment in the 300 block of Underwood at the Fairgrounds Housing Complex.
Dellell Thomas, 9, lives in the building next door. She was outside grabbing something from her mom's car when she heard the shot.
"I run inside and lock the door. I didn't want to come back out," says Thomas.
Brown and his wife live about a block away. They go door-to-door in the neighborhood for Victory Outreach Church to preach non-violence. They hope this death sparks change.
"We love our neighbors as we love ourselves, you know. We try to teach them that there is a better way to live than fighting," says Brown.
Police say they are currently questioning suspects in Hollins death. If you know anything about the shooting you are asked to call Rockford Police at (815) 987-5824 or Crime Stoppers at (815) 963-STOP.
