Illinois bills expected to reach $22 billion in five years

CHICAGO (WREX) -

Unless legislative action is taken to keep pension costs down, the backlog of unpaid bills in Illinois is expected to reach almost $22 billion within the next five years, according to a report by the Civic Federation.

The group forecasted a $35 billion backlog in bills just last year, but this year's outlook is slightly better thanks to a law signed last year cutting $1.6 billion out of Medicaid.

According to the report, the backlog is expected to reach $21.7 billion in 2018, compared to this year's $7.8 billion.
