Two suspects Rockford Police say robbed the BP Amoco gas station on Linden Road were arrested after leading police on a chase through three counties.
Robert P. Taylor, 41, and Lindsay M. Whittington, 29, were arrested on February 20 in Douglas County. Earlier in the evening, a car containing Taylor and Whittington fled from Leroy Police Department officers. After a short chase, the officers terminated the pursuit.
Later that night, just after 11:00 p.m., a deputy with Douglas County saw the same car run a red light at a high rate of speed in Tuscola, Illinois. The deputy tried to stop the car, but it fled. After a short, chase that deputy also terminated his pursuit.
The two also led an officer from Villa Grove on a short chase after the officer saw them drive through town at a high rate of speed.
About a half hour later, the car was witnessed by a Douglas County Deputy. A pursuit involving several law enforcement agencies ensued and lasted over an hour, covering about 50 miles through Douglas, Cole, and Moultrie counties.
The chase ended just before 1:00 a.m. February 21 when the car crashed in a ditch in Douglas County. After a brief foot chase, the two were apprehended.
Both were arrested on warrants for Armed Robbery for the January 19 robbery of the Rockford gas station. Whittington was also charged with DUI, Aggravated Battery, Aggravated Fleeing and Eluding, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
Police are not officially releasing photos of Taylor or Whittington due to the ongoing investigation.
