The Rock River Valley Blood Center is encouraging anyone with type O negative blood to donate.
The center currently has only 10% of a one day's supply. The blood type is universal making treatment for emergency cases faster. Trauma patients are able to receive type O negative no matter what type of blood they have.
Rock River Valley Blood Center Marketing Manager, Jennifer Bowman says the shortage is a concern for the center. "We can talk to lots of people about the need for O negative but only 7% of the population has O negative, so we really need anyone that is O negative, to consider coming in. I encourage employers, if you have employees that are O negative, to let them leave the office early, maybe come over at lunch."
There are two locations to donate in Rockford, one in Belvidere and one in Freeport. For more information go to www.rrvbc.org.
