Over $1.1 million refunded to community through Goodwill tax program

Through its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, Goodwill Industries of Northern Illinois has filed over 725 returns in just three weeks.

The program is in its fourth year and has generated $1.1 million in refunds so far this season. Besides locations in Rockford, Machesney Park, and DeKalb, Goodwill also has a mobile site that will travel throughout the region.

The VITA sites offer free tax assistance for families and individuals will income less than $50,000 and $25,000, respectively. Goodwill has also partnered with the National Disability Institute and United Way Worldwide to offer free federal and state preparation and filing to qualified individuals online at www.goodwillni.org. Eligible individuals or families must have a combined income of $57,000 or less.

In addition to VITA sites around the community, Goodwill will host a Financial Festival on Saturday, March 16 at 615 North Longwood Street from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The festival is free and will offer free income tax preparation and filing as well as local experts to help with banking, credit reports, job search assistance, paying for college, low-cost internet and cell phone service, and more.
