The federal government approves Illinois' plan to partner for an insurance marketplace, and make coverage more affordable for people and businesses.
There are several conditions for the state to move forward. Illinois has to sign a memorandum of understanding with Washington about how Springfield will monitor and approve plans sold on the exchange. That deadline is March 1st. A separate memo needs to show how the state will run consumer outreach activities. That's got to be done by April 1st.
"And what that means for thousands of citizens in Illinois and across this country is that the security of affordable health coverage will finally be within reach of many of our citizens," says Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius.
The online exchange should be up and running for enrollment in October.
